Share
Overview
This waffle-texture washcloth uses double crochet and front post double crochet to create a deep grid texture with a squishy, practical feel.
Materials
- 100% cotton worsted weight yarn
- 5 mm crochet hook
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
Finished size
About 8 inches by 8 inches.
Abbreviations
- ch = chain
- st/sts = stitch/stitches
- dc = double crochet
- fpdc = front post double crochet
- sc = single crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
Special stitch: front post double crochet
Instead of inserting the hook into the top loops of the next stitch, insert the hook from front to back around the post of the next double crochet and complete a double crochet.
Pattern notes
- To resize, chain a multiple of 3 plus 2.
- Ch 2 at the beginning of a row does not count as a stitch.
- Count stitches so every row keeps the same stitch count.
- The waffle texture shows most strongly on one side.
Step-by-step pattern instructions
Step 1: Make the foundation chain
Chain 35. This equals 33 stitches after Row 1.
Step 2: Work Row 1
Work 1 dc in the third chain from the hook and in each chain across. You should have 33 stitches.
Step 3: Work Row 2
Ch 2 and turn. Work 1 dc in the first stitch, 1 fpdc in the next stitch, then repeat: dc in each of the next 2 stitches, fpdc in the next stitch. Continue across and work 1 dc in the last stitch.
Step 4: Work Row 3
Ch 2 and turn. Work 1 dc in the first stitch, 1 dc in the next stitch, then repeat: fpdc in each of the next 2 stitches, dc in the next stitch. Continue across and work 1 dc in the last stitch.
Step 5: Repeat to square size
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until the washcloth reaches your desired square size.
Step 6: Optional border, Round 1
Ch 1 and work around the cloth. Along the waffle sides, work about 3 sc stitches per waffle square. Across the top and bottom, work 1 sc into each stitch. At each corner, work sc, ch 1, sc. Join to the first stitch.
Step 7: Optional border, Round 2
Continue in the same direction. Ch 1 and work 1 sc in the back loop only of each stitch. At each corner, work sc, ch 1, sc in the corner space. Join with a slip stitch.
Step 8: Finish
Fasten off and weave in all ends.
