Pattern notes
- Chain any even number to adjust the size.
- Every row starts and ends with a slip stitch.
- Work each hdc into the hdc from the previous row and each sl st into the sl st from the previous row.
- Keep the first and last slip stitches slightly loose so they are easier to work into.
Step-by-step pattern instructions
Step 1: Make the foundation chain
Chain 30, or chain any even number for your desired width.
Step 2: Work Row 1
Work 1 sl st in the second chain from the hook, then 1 hdc in the next chain. Continue alternating sl st and hdc across the row, ending with a sl st in the last chain. Ch 1 and turn.
Step 3: Build the textured body
For Row 2 and every following row, work 1 sl st in the first stitch, then 1 hdc in the next stitch. Repeat this alternating pattern across the row and work a sl st in the last stitch. Ch 1 and turn.
Step 4: Continue to square size
Repeat the same row until the washcloth is square, about 35 rows for an 8-inch cloth depending on your tension.
Step 5: Optional border
Ch 1 and turn. Work 1 sc into each stitch around the washcloth. At each corner, work sc, ch 1, sc in the same corner. Join with a slip stitch to the first border stitch.
Step 6: Finish
Fasten off and weave in all ends.
