Chain a multiple of 2, then add 1 extra chain for turning. For a small practice swatch, start with a short chain so it is easy to check the texture as it grows.

How to make one bamboo stitch

Crochet hook forming a bamboo stitch with multiple loops on the hook
  1. Yarn over, insert your hook into the target chain or chain space, yarn over, and pull up a loop.
  2. Slip stitch through the first loop on your hook only. Two loops remain on the hook.
  3. Yarn over, insert the hook into the same chain or space again, yarn over, and pull up another loop.
  4. Yarn over and pull through all loops on the hook to finish the bamboo stitch.

Row 1

  1. Work the first bamboo stitch into the third chain from the hook.
  2. Chain 1.
  3. Skip the next chain, then make a bamboo stitch in the following chain.
  4. Repeat: chain 1, skip 1 chain, bamboo stitch in the next chain.
  5. Make a final bamboo stitch in the last chain of the row.

Row 2

  1. Turn and chain 2.
  2. Make a bamboo stitch in the first chain-1 space.
  3. Repeat: chain 1, bamboo stitch in the next chain-1 space.
  4. Work the last bamboo stitch into the turning-chain space at the end of the row.

Repeat and finish

Repeat Row 2 until your swatch is the size you want. The stitches should lean in alternating rows and settle into the raised bamboo-style texture.

Tension tips

  • Keep every pulled-up loop the same height.
  • Do not tighten the slip stitch too much after pulling through the first loop.
  • Use a smooth yarn while learning so the stitch shape is easy to see.
