How to Crochet Bamboo Stitch Step by Step
Share
This bamboo stitch tutorial walks through the stitch in rows so you can practice the raised, interlocking V-shaped texture on a small swatch first.
For project ideas and best uses, see the companion guide: What Is Bamboo Stitch in Crochet?
Materials
- Smooth worsted-weight yarn for practice
- Crochet hook size recommended for your yarn
- Scissors and yarn needle
Abbreviations
- ch = chain
- yo = yarn over
- st = stitch
- sk = skip
- sp = space
- sl st = slip stitch
Foundation chain

Chain a multiple of 2, then add 1 extra chain for turning. For a small practice swatch, start with a short chain so it is easy to check the texture as it grows.
How to make one bamboo stitch

- Yarn over, insert your hook into the target chain or chain space, yarn over, and pull up a loop.
- Slip stitch through the first loop on your hook only. Two loops remain on the hook.
- Yarn over, insert the hook into the same chain or space again, yarn over, and pull up another loop.
- Yarn over and pull through all loops on the hook to finish the bamboo stitch.
Row 1
- Work the first bamboo stitch into the third chain from the hook.
- Chain 1.
- Skip the next chain, then make a bamboo stitch in the following chain.
- Repeat: chain 1, skip 1 chain, bamboo stitch in the next chain.
- Make a final bamboo stitch in the last chain of the row.
Row 2
- Turn and chain 2.
- Make a bamboo stitch in the first chain-1 space.
- Repeat: chain 1, bamboo stitch in the next chain-1 space.
- Work the last bamboo stitch into the turning-chain space at the end of the row.
Repeat and finish
Repeat Row 2 until your swatch is the size you want. The stitches should lean in alternating rows and settle into the raised bamboo-style texture.
Tension tips
- Keep every pulled-up loop the same height.
- Do not tighten the slip stitch too much after pulling through the first loop.
- Use a smooth yarn while learning so the stitch shape is easy to see.
