Pattern notes
- Chain any number to adjust the washcloth width.
- Ch 1 at the beginning of a row does not count as a stitch.
- The border is optional.
- For side stripes, change color for two-row bands near each edge.
Step-by-step pattern instructions
Step 1: Make the foundation chain
Chain 33, or chain any number for your preferred size.
Step 2: Work Row 1
Work 1 hhdc in the third chain from the hook and in each chain across. Ch 1 and turn.
Step 3: Repeat the herringbone rows
Work 1 hhdc in the first stitch and in each stitch across. Ch 1 and turn. Repeat until the washcloth is square, about 28 rows for the source size.
Step 4: Optional stripe placement
To create the striped edge look, change to a contrast color on Rows 5-6 and Rows 23-24, then return to the main color after each two-row stripe.
Step 5: Optional border
Work hhdc stitches evenly around all four sides, placing 3 hhdc in each corner. Aim for an even number of stitches on each side so the cloth lies flat.
Step 6: Finish
Fasten off and weave in all ends.
