Classic beginner crochet scrunchie on a bright craft table

Classic Beginner Crochet Scrunchie Pattern

This is the best first scrunchie because it uses one yarn color, one hair elastic, and a simple stitch repeat. Work slowly around the elastic the first time, then repeat the same structure for faster batches.

Materials

  • Worsted or DK yarn
  • Hair elastic
  • 4 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Place the yarn behind the hair elastic and pull up a loop through the elastic.
  2. Chain 1 to secure the yarn around the elastic.
  3. Work single crochet stitches around the elastic until it is fully covered.
  4. Push the stitches together as you go so the elastic does not show.
  5. Join to the first stitch with a slip stitch.
  6. Chain 2 for the second round.
  7. Work 2 double crochet stitches into each stitch around for soft fullness.
  8. Join with a slip stitch at the end of the round.
  9. Fasten off and leave a tail long enough to weave in securely.
  10. Weave the tail through the inside stitches and trim neatly.

Finishing tips

  • Cover the elastic fully before adding fullness.
  • Use smooth yarn for your first try.
  • Do not pull the stitches too tight around the elastic.

How to use it

Use the finished scrunchie for everyday hair styling, gift sets, craft fair baskets, party favors, or quick accessory bundles. Make two or three in matching colors for a more polished gift.
